Ontario Small Claims Form 20R: Notice of Termination of Garnishment

Once a garnished debt is paid in full, Ontario's guide says the creditor must immediately serve a Notice of Termination of Garnishment (Form 20R) on both the garnishee and the clerk of the court. If the creditor does not, the guide gives the debtor two routes: a Request for Clerk's Order on Consent (Form 11.2A), or a motion to the court.

Not legal advice; Ontario information as of November 2, 2026. Source, read on that date: the Government of Ontario's Guide to Procedures in Small Claims Court, “After judgment” (page updated July 2, 2026). The Form 20R PDF, the text of the Small Claims Court Rules and the fee schedule were not read, so this page does not quote a rule, name a form version or give a dollar amount. The court may have issued a newer version of any form.

Who does what when the debt is paid

If you are…What Ontario's guide says
The creditor, and the debt is paid in full under a notice of garnishmentYou must immediately serve a Notice of Termination of Garnishment (Form 20R) on the garnishee and on the clerk. The guide says “serve” and gives no number of days beyond “immediately.”
The debtor, and you have paid all you owe under the judgmentYou can fill out a Request for Clerk's Order on Consent (Form 11.2A) and check the box asking for a clerk's order noting that payment has been made in full satisfaction of the order or terms of settlement.
The debtor, and the creditor will not or cannot complete the termination formYou can make a motion to the court for an order stating that payment has been made in full satisfaction of the debt. The guide says there is a fee for this process and gives no amount.

What the Form 11.2A route needs

  • Both parties sign. The guide says each party must sign the form in the presence of their own witness.
  • It is filed with the court. The guide says the form must be filed. See our Form 11.2A guide for the other orders the clerk can make on consent and what happens if the clerk refuses.
  • A creditor who has stopped cooperating is the problem. Because the form needs the creditor's signature, the guide's fallback for that case is the motion above.

What this page does not cover

It does not say how long a garnishment lasts, how much of a wage can be taken, or how to serve a document. For how a notice of garnishment starts, see the Form 20E garnishment guide. For the whole sequence from claim to collection, see the Small Claims Court process guide. Other collection steps are the Form 20H examination of a debtor and the writs of seizure and sale.
